Did you know it’s best to include rinsing in your oral hygiene routine? Well, it’s true! It’s recommended to brush twice a day, floss once a day, and rinse daily. To help you properly rinse your mouth, Dr. Damon Wright and our dental team have some instructions for you.
First, it’s important to use a mouthwash that has been approved by the American Dental Association. That way you know it is safe and effective for use. It’s also encouraged to use antibacterial, antiseptic, or fluoride mouthwash.
Now that you have the proper rinse, it’s important to read the instructions on the bottle. Washes typically recommend swishing for 30-60 seconds. So, measure the appropriate amount of wash into the lid of the bottle or into a separate cup. Then, pour the wash into the mouth and swish it around for the recommended amount of time. When the time is up, spit it into the sink and try not to drink or eat anything for about 30 minutes.
It does not matter if you choose to rinse your mouth before or after you brush. However, many choose to rinse after they brush and floss because it helps complete the cleaning job and reaches the areas the brush and floss couldn’t.
